Sam's Portrait Session at Pier 35 in NYC!

If you're like me, you absolutely LOVE exploring the city. It's always exciting to find a new location to shoot in, beautiful backgrounds for my clients to have diverse images in their galleries, and of course an ideal lighting situation. I also tend to favor locations that have an interesting balance of concrete jungle as well as a touch of greenery so all of the images don't look like they were shot in the exact same spot.

A few days ago, I hit the jackpot with this stunning location my client Sam had chosen for his portrait session. It was right on Pier 35, right next to Mussel Beach, which housed swings, benches, concrete chairs and of course breath taking views of the Manhattan Bridge. Right before the weekend, as I lay beneath the hot sun, listening to the waves almost politely hitting the shore, I received a text from Sam asking for my next availability.

I smiled thinking to myself how it's always so exciting to have a client I've already worked with contact me for another session. We scheduled it for the very end of the heat wave, aiming to capture his vision at sunset.

Sam is a lovely human being. He is all smiles all the time, very polite, well spoken and exceptionally studious! He is currently studying for the MCAT. He plans to become a surgeon in the future, but in the mean time, he wanted to have some fun shooting a portrait session on a warm, thankfully cloudy day.

I decided to begin shooting with the close ups, using a portrait lens. The reason I chose to start this way is because I knew with the intense heat and dark outfit choice, we would run the risk of capturing droplets towards the end of the session. So I figured we'd get the close ups out of the way and take the wider angle shots afterwards. I'm glad I had this thought process, as that is exactly what happened!

Although Sam is tame and soft spoken, his confidence really shone through the images. We drew some inspiration from watch ads with the likes of David Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio. I directed the shoot and told him how to pose, where to look and what to think of as I clicked away at my Canon.

We got through a 45 minute session with tons of really great shots, different backgrounds and refined poses. He is a natural who gave it his all, took direction very well and wasn't shy despite all of the people around us.
